Principles of Interior Design

Interior Design is an art and science of improving the inside of a structure to create a healthier and more esthetically pleasing surroundings for those who use the space. An interior designer is a person who researches, plans, coordinates, and handles such improvement projects. Interior design is much more than simply painting the walls and adding furniture but involves careful analysis and evaluation of the physical, psychological, cultural, environmental, and aesthetic factors that must be addressed in order for a space to be both functional and beautiful. Interior design is also an essential component of building research. The process of designing an interior space may require many years of training, but there are numerous schools that offer interior design certification.

Interior design can be of many different types. Each has its own particular style and there are several subtypes of interior design. These subtypes include residential styles such as country-like interiors; contemporary styles such as trendy, minimalist styles; formal styles such as traditional Georgian and Edwardian styles; and artsy or funky styles such as Post-Impressionistic styles. The styles that are most common can easily be found in a home environment.

Interior designers work with architects to bring the most pleasing style of their choice to the client. Although they usually collaborate and work closely with architects, interior designers do not necessarily need to be architects. They work with them to identify spaces that would benefit from certain elements to bring about the look and feel that is desired.

While many styles have evolved from one type of style, there are some basics that remain consistent throughout all styles. One of these fundamentals includes the importance of balance and proportion in all forms of modern homes. Balance and proportion refer to how an interior design project moves throughout the different areas of the home, paying special attention to the scale and shape of each space. The use of large spaces in small areas, as is often the case in small living rooms, can create an appearance that is cluttered and uninviting. In contrast, the use of small spaces in large areas can be overbearing, resulting in a cramped and stressful living environment.

Another principle of interior design that is fundamental is a color palette that is constructed around primary and secondary colors. When used appropriately, these colors can enhance each other, resulting in a beautiful effect. Although many designers do not realize it, the use of colors is a big part of the whole process. Color Pallette Design is a big factor when selecting new modern home designs.

Although there are many different components that go into planning and creating interiors, the primary component is the preparation of a design. Planning is a step that must be completed in order to begin the interior design process. Once planning is complete, interior designers can start to look at various materials and colors to fit the plans. Interior designers can also work with architects, engineers, contractors, interior designers, and clients in order to get the interior spaces designed properly. Interior designers can either work independently or as part of a larger team. Many offices employ interior designers on a full time basis.
